Winter League

The WCCC-YBL Winter League offers a safe, clean and exciting environment where more than 500 children of our community learn the values of good sportsmanship, teamwork and competitive play.  We play a 10-week schedule, with one game and one practice each week.  A single-elimination tournament follows the end of the regular schedule.

     * Divisions may be re-aligned based on registration numbers.

PLAYING OUT OF DIVISION
At the discretion of the WCCCYBL, Board of Directors a player may play up or down from his/her designated division pending skills assessment and space availability.   Playing out of division is intended to be the exception not the rule.  The player will need to attend the Skills Assessment for both his/her designated division and the division where placement is requested.  Please indicate when you register if you would like to play out of division.

Any girl interested in playing in a division designated “Boys” may make that selection at registration.  All “Boys” divisions are co-ed.  Please contact the League Registrar ([email protected]) if the division in which you want to register your child is not available.

GRADE VERIFICATION   The WCCC-YBL reserves the right to request grade verification from any player, at any time during the season.  Players who are home-schooled will be assigned to a division based on age.

HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY PLAYERS   Players on a high school varsity basketball team roster may not participate in WCCC-YBL games.  Senior Boys registration closes in early November to allow players time to determine their varsity status.

REGISTRATION   Registration for the Winter League opens September 10th and will close when each division reaches its capacity or on October 15th, whichever comes first.  Some of our divisions do reach capacity, so we encourage you to register early.  Once a division is full, a wait list will be started with no guarantee that players on the wait list will be placed on a team.

PLAYERS ARE NOT REGISTERED TO PLAY UNTIL ALL REGISTRATION FEES HAVE BEEN PAID IN FULL.

You may register and pay online at www.wcccbasketball.com.  Please email the League registrar if you need assistance with your registration.  If you accidentally sign your child up for the wrong league, please email the League ([email protected]) to request a transfer to the correct league.  Please do NOT also register your child in the correct league then request a refund.

REGISTRATION WAIT LIST   If a division reaches capacity, you may be placed on a waitlist.  We encourage parents to register even if the division has a waitlist, as we may be able to expand a division if enough players are available to form two additional teams.  Please be aware, however, that registering for the wait list does not guarantee a player will be placed on a team

FEES   Registration fees for the 2023-2024 season are: $160 for first child, $140 for each additional child registered from the same family.  A $10 post-game drink fee will also be added to all Mini-Mite and Junior Mite division player registrations (grades K-2).

Financial assistance is available on a sliding scale to assist families experiencing financial hardship.  If you would like to request assistance, please contact the League Treasurer ([email protected]) and a Financial Assistance Application will be sent to you.

Refunds:  Registration fees may be refunded (net of a $25 cancellation fee) up until October 15, 2023.  No refunds will be made after that date.

UNIFORMS   Team game shirts are furnished as part of the registration fee.   STANDARD WCCC SHORTS ARE REQUIRED FOR GAMES and are not included in your registration fee.  WCCC shorts cost $15 / pair if paid with your child’s registration fee.  Cost is $20 / pair if purchased at the Skills Assessment sessions or later.  Players who have WCCC shorts from prior participation in the WCCCYBL, are not required to purchase new shorts each season.  Players will not be allowed to participate in League games unless wearing the proper team game shirt and WCCC shorts.

SKILLS ASSESSMENT   All players in all divisions are strongly encouraged to attend a skills assessment, regardless of whether he/she has played previously in the WCCCYBL.  Each year we have many new coaches and every coach deserves to know the playing ability of all players registered in their division.  Skills assessments will begin the week of October 22nd.  The schedule for Skills Assessments will be posted on the League website (www.wcccbasketball.com) in early October.

TEAM ASSIGNMENT  A week or two following the division skills assessment, coaches will meet to make player team assignments.  You will receive an email when your child is assigned to a team.

PRACTICE AND GAME SCHEDULES   Teams practice one night a week for one hour beginning in early November.  Your child’s practice will be at the same place, day and time each week.  You will not know your child’s practice night until he/she is assigned to a team.  You can indicate when you register if there is a night when your child cannot practice and we will make sure he/she is not assigned to practice on that night.  Players cannot choose their practice night.

Teams play a 10-game regular season, followed by a single elimination tournament.  Teams play one game a week on Friday night, Saturday or Sunday afternoon beginning the weekend of December 1st.  A tentative game schedule will be posted to the League website prior to the division skills assessment.  A final game schedule will be posted in mid-November.  Following the 10-week regular season, a single-elimination tournament is played to determine each division's champion.  The Championship game for each division will be played on Sunday, March 3rd.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES   The WCCC Youth Basketball League is a completely volunteer organization and in order to continue it must have adults who are willing to serve in a variety of capacities.  If you are interested in coaching or assisting with a team, please indicate your interest on your child’s registration.   This information will be forwarded to the appropriate Division Director who, along with the WCCCYBL Board of Directors make all coaching selections.  Please also consider participating as a Board member and assisting with general league operations and fundraising.

Coaches (Head / Assistant Coach)  Volunteering to coach does not guarantee a team will be assigned to you. The WCCC-YBL Executive Committee makes final coach selections.  All volunteer coaches (head coach and assistant coach) must consent to a background check and complete the CDC's Youth Sports - Online Concussion Training before being eligible to lead a team practice and/or game.  Once a volunteer is selected to serve as a coach, the volunteer will be sent information on the background check and concussion training process.

Official Scorer's Table (Official Scorebook/Scoreboard Operator)
Each game requires two volunteers to run the Scorer's Table.  The official scorebook volunteer tallies the game's running score, individual points, individual fouls, team fouls and team timeouts. The scoreboard operator inputs the score for each team and keeps the game clock. This is a great way to begin volunteering for WCCC-YBL. Training will be provided so newcomers are encouraged to participate.

Expectations of Parents and Spectators

WCCC - Youth Basketball League parents and spectators are expected to:

  • Keep a healthy perspective and understanding of the mission of the WCCC-YBL.  Basketball is a game for the ENJOYMENT AND BENEFIT OF THE PLAYERS.  It is not the most important thing and should be treated accordingly.
  • Assist in giving all players a fun, safe and competitive learning experience.
  • Be considerate of the efforts of players as well as those charged with managing the conduct of the game (coaches, referees, scorekeepers, etc.).  Loud, boisterous, and threatening behavior can result in children carrying such behavior into their school and social life.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude.  Blaming the loss of a game on the opposing team, the officials or some factor beyond one’s control has no benefit and results in young people developing an attitude of blaming someone else for their shortcomings rather than concentrating on how to improve them.
