The WCCC - Proud History, Bright Future

What is the West Central Community Center?

The West Central Community Center is a community-owned, 14-acre complex located on Yadkinville Road near the intersection with Lewisville-Vienna Road.  The WCCC is 100% owned and operated by the residents of west central Forsyth County.

Proud History

The idea for a community center originated in the mid-1950’s with the purchase of land by the Vienna Civic Club.  In 1966, the Vienna Civic Club and the Pfafftown Jaycees joined together to raise funds to make the community center a reality.  In April 1968, the WCCC, Inc. was formed and groundbreaking ceremonies were held.  The WCCC facility was dedicated and opened for public use in March 1969.

In 1988, the operation and maintenance of the WCCC was turned over to the WCCC-Youth Basketball League.  Today, the WCCC-YBL is the sole lessee of the WCCC and is the sole source of financial support for the WCCC facility.  The WCCC-YBL is fully responsible for the care and upkeep of the WCCC facility and surrounding acreage.

Bright Future – what will our legacy be?

The WCCC-YBL is committed to upgrading the facilities of the WCCC and restoring it to the community treasure it once was.  Our goal is to identify and complete all improvements by March 2019, the 50th anniversary of the building.  To assess the advisability of undertaking and to lay out a plan for completing these improvements within the desired four-year time frame, a Capital Improvement and Renovation Master Plan (the “Legacy 2019 Plan”) has been developed.

The Legacy 2019 Plan - Proposed Facility Improvements

The Legacy 2019 Plan includes an action plan and a list of recommended improvements that will both meet the needs of the community center and fit within the financial capacity of the WCCC-YBL.

The goals of the Legacy 2019 Plan are to bring the community center building up to current building codes and improve the appearance, accessibility and functional use of the building.

Restrooms and Lobby/Entryway Renovation - completed October 2015   The restrooms were updated to provide a cleaner, fresher and more welcoming appearance as well as to meet all ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements.   Functionality and efficiency were improved by a redesigned layout and installation of new, energy efficient fixtures.  The entryway into and out of the gym was widened to allow for easier flow of traffic to and from the court.  Project Cost:  $130,000

Kitchen Renovation - completed August 2017   The kitchen was completed renovated with new flooring, lighting and cooking equipment.  It has received all required approvals to cook and serve prepared food.  Project Cost:  $175,000

Gym Renovation   Proposed Improvements:  Install new, energy-efficient natural gas furnaces to replace the current aged oil furnaces and air conditioning in the main gym. Install a good quality synthetic flooring that will provide suitable traction for basketball play.  Replace the bleachers with seating that meets current safety standards.  Replace all torn and exposed insulation as well as all warped or rotted wall and ceiling boards.  Cover the walls along the baseline of the court with safety padding.  New wall coverings which extend from floor to ceiling will be considered to improve both the overall appearance of the gym, as well as provide a means for better insulation.  Estimated Project Cost:  $250,000

The Challenge

The Challenge    An obvious challenge to completing the capital improvements recommended in the Legacy 2019 Plan is raising the funds necessary to upgrade this 46-year-old facility.  Executing the full Legacy 2019 Plan will be an ambitious undertaking for an entirely volunteer-based organization like the WCCC-YBL.  For these reasons, we will seek to complete the plan in phases giving careful ongoing consideration to the Plan’s budgetary effect on the operations of the WCCC-YBL.   While the WCCC-YBL does have a level of cash flow it can contribute to these projects, it will be very difficult for the WCCC-YBL to complete the improvements proposed in the Legacy 2019 Plan without significant financial support from the community and other financial supporters.

How can you help?

The WCCC is a community facility, owned and operated by citizens like you.  The WCCC is unique because it does not receive any help from government agencies nor does it receive any tax dollars.

If you would like to see:

·     the WCCC owned and operated by the community;

·     current programs continued and improved;

·     new programs offered;

·     the existing facilities improved;

·     new facilities developed;

then the WCCC needs your ideas, participation, and financial support.

Please consider helping by:

·     making a cash donation

·     becoming a business sponsor

·     supporting the WCCC-YBL’s annual chicken pie sale

·     encouraging your friends, family and neighbors to support the WCCC and its programs

We have something other communities do not have, a facility owned and operated by the citizens for the citizens.  We have the potential for an even better community center, but we need your help to do it.
