August League

Beat the dog days of summer by playing in the WCCC-YBL August League.  We play a 4-week schedule beginning the first full week of August.  Teams will practice twice the week before games begin.  Each team will play two games a week.  Game nights will be determined once registration is complete.

2023 AUGUST LEAGUE

LEAGUE STRUCTURE
August League is organized into divisions based on the grade a player is going into in the upcoming school year.  All divisions are co-ed.

DIVISIONS
Midgets (grades 5-7)
Juniors (grades 8-10)
*Please note: Divisions are subject to change based on registration numbers.

PLAYING OUT OF DIVISION
At the discretion of the August League Director, a player may play up or down from his/her designated division pending skills assessment and space availability.   Playing out of division is intended to be the exception not the rule.  The player will need to attend the Skills Assessment for both his/her designated division and the division where placement is requested.  Please indicate when you register if you would like to play out of division.

GRADE VERIFICATION
The WCCC-YBL reserves the right to request grade verification from any player, at any time during the season.

REGISTRATION
Registration for the 2023 August League opens on Saturday, June 10 and will close on Wednesday, July 12, or when each division reaches its capacity whichever comes first.  Some of our divisions do reach capacity, so we encourage you to register early.  Once a division is full, a wait list will be started with no guarantee that players on the waitlist will be placed on a team.  Registration is online only through the League's website. Participants are not registered to play until all registration fees have been paid in full.

FEES
Registration fee for the 2023 August League is: $115.  (An additional $3.00 handling fee will be charged on each registration order by Sports Connect the League's registration service provider.) Registration fees may be refunded (net of a $25 cancellation fee) up until the date of the player’s skills assessment.  No refunds will be made after that date.

SKILLS ASSESSMENT
All players are strongly encouraged to attend the skills assessment regardless of whether he/she has played previously in the WCCC-YBL.  Knowledge of a player’s current skill level is helpful when making teams and makes for a more competitive league. Following skills assessments, coaches will meet to make player team assignments.  You will receive an email when your child is assigned to a team. Skills assessments will be the week of July 17. Assigned day and time for participants will be announced at a later date.

UNIFORMS
Team game shirts are furnished as part of the registration fee.   WCCC shorts are encouraged, but not required for August League games.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
WCCC-YBL is solely operated by volunteers, thus volunteer assistance is essential to operating the league. Please consider these volunteer opportunities. If you are interested in either, please sign-up to volunteer on our website during registration so we know to reach out to you.

Coach (Head Coach/Assistant Coach)
Please note volunteering to coach does not guarantee a team will be assigned to you. The WCCC-YBL Executive Committee will make final decisions on whether a coach is assigned a team. All volunteer coaches (head coach and assistant coach) must consent to a background check and are required to complete the CDC's Youth Sports - Online Concussion Training before being eligible to lead a team practice and/or game. Once a volunteer is approved by the Executive Committee to serve as a coach, the volunteer will be sent information on the background check and concussion training process.

Official Scoring Table (Official Scorebook/Scoreboard Operator)
Each game requires two volunteers with one keeping an official scorebook and the other operating the scoreboard. The official scorebook tallies the game's running score, individual points, individual fouls, team fouls and team timeouts. The scoreboard operator inputs the score for each team and keeps the game clock. This is a great way to begin volunteering for WCCC-YBL. Training will be provided so newcomers are encouraged to participate.

Expectations of Parents and Spectators

WCCC - Youth Basketball League parents and spectators are expected to:

  • Keep a healthy perspective and understanding of the mission of the WCCC-YBL.  Basketball is a game for the ENJOYMENT AND BENEFIT OF THE PLAYERS.  It is not the most important thing and should be treated accordingly.
  • Assist in giving all players a fun, safe and competitive learning experience.
  • Be considerate of the efforts of players as well as those charged with managing the conduct of the game (coaches, referees, scorekeepers, etc.).  Loud, boisterous, and threatening behavior can result in children carrying such behavior into their school and social life.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude.  Blaming the loss of a game on the opposing team, the officials or some factor beyond one’s control has no benefit and results in young people developing an attitude of blaming someone else for their shortcomings rather than concentrating on how to improve them.
